Milton Caniff

Un autre très talentueux auteur américain, Milton CANIFF, créateur notamment des célèbres "Terry et les Pirates" et "Steve Canyon", a utilisé aussi ses talents en tant qu'illustrateur de presse pour des romans-feuilletons.

En voici un exemple concret.

Le cas de Caniff est intéressant. Il a beaucoup travaillé avec Noel Sickles, et on sait que ce dessinateur l'a aidé à progresser (en particulier dans sa maîtrise du noir et blanc). Il y a eu des influences mutuelles entre eux, qu'il reste aujourd'hui difficile de bien définir. La postérité a surtout retenu le nom de Caniff. C'est peut être parce que ses récits étaient meilleurs.

Dans les exemples d'illustrations que tu nous donnes, le dessin est au fond très proche de celui des débuts de Terry et les Pirates. Il n'est pas encore parvenu à sa pleine maturité dans l'utilisation des contrastes noir-blanc, et à ce style que reprendront ensuite Hugo Pratt, Munoz et quelques autres ...

Dans les années 1980, les éditions Gilou-Glénat ont publié plusieurs albums de Steve Canyon crée par Milton CANIFF dans une version noir et blanc.

Grâce aux nombeux "comic-book" originaux consacrés à ce héros, nous pouvons aussi découvrir les pages en couleur, comme dans ce récit repris ci-après.

Deux remarques préliminaires : Le dessin de couverture a vraisemblablement été réalisé par un autre auteur, car on ne reconnaît absolument pas la caractéristique du trait "cannifien".

Il en va de même pour l'avant-dernière planche, présentée bizarrement en noir et blanc.

Superbe. Le comic book (avec les couleurs) est agréable pour découvrir ces histoires de Steve Canyon. On peut d'ailleurs en découvrir quelques récits en français dans les fascicules "Les héros de mystère".

Il s'agit, je pense, d'un épisode tardif qui se déroule après que Steve Canyon soit retourné dans l'US Air Force. Cela devrait donc dater de la fin des années 50, ou des années 60.

Les albums Glénat ou Gilou se limitent à reprendre les premières années. On ne connait pas en France la plus grande partie de cette oeuvre de Caniff.

Tu as trouvé un filon.

Ce n'est que le début d'une série, en fait. Y a t-il eu beaucoup d'épisodes de ce Dart Davis que je ne connais pas ?

Effectivement, on peut légitimement penser que cet épisode constituait une sorte de prologue à d'autres récits de la vie de ce jeune personnage.

Néanmoins, il demeure compréhensible en tant que tel.

Peut-être un jour prochain pourrai-je trouver une suite si elle existe.

En tout cas cette histoire est issue d'une revue ayant reçu "l'imprimatur" de l'US Air FORCE.

J'ai "googelisé" Steve Crevice pour découvrir que ce récit avait été dessiné en 1953 par un certain William Overgard (connait pas) pour un comic-book intitulé Whack (connait pas non plus ).

Ce magazine semble être un précurseur de MAD.

Apparemment, c'était un cartoonist, ami de Caniff, qui l'avait plus ou moins remplacé à une époque où il avait été malade.

Curieuse histoire ! Je me demande où et quand elle se passe (en Chine peut être, mais à quelle époque) ?

Le moment où elle a été dessinée, non.

Par contre, si tu agrandis la couverture, tu constateras que le copyright est daté de 1951.

C'est donc bien en Chine que cela se passe. 1951, cela veut dire avant la guerre de Corée, probablement pendant ou juste après la guerre que se sont livrés Mao et Tchang Kaï Tchek.

C'est ce que j'allais dire (sans vérifier, car, comme Buck Danny - donc Charlier - est concerné, je m'étais déjà penché il y a longtemps sur cette préséance). J'ajoute que :
- le portrait de Buck Danny est celui du co-créateur de la série, le fameux Georges Troisfontaines. En particulier, et justement, les deux petites mèches caractéristiques de Buck Danny dont vous parlez sont celles, tout aussi caractéristiques et réelles, de Troifontaines à l'époque.
- Buck Danny est né (dans Spirou) le 2 janvier 1947, donc vraiment au tout début de l'année. Il faudrait savoir quel jour ou quelle semaine (ou quel mois) de 1947 est né Steve Canyon, mais c'est pratiquement sûr que c'est après Buck Danny. De toute façon, même si c'était la veille...
Total : pour tirer le portrait de Buck, c'est sûr à 150% que Victor Hubinon a copié sur Troisfontaines et n'a pas pu copier sur Steve Canyon.
Cela dit, Hubinon ne se cachait pas pour dire son admiration pour Caniff et pour dire qu'il l'a copié, d'où sans doute une sorte d'ajustement du portrait de Buck sur celui de Steve, au fil des années.

Je crois aussi que ce type de héros faisait partie des "canons" de l'époque. Voir par exemple au cinéma plusieurs seconds rôles d'Hollywood lui ressemblant : Denis O'Keefe, Richard Jaeckel, Mark Stevens, puis ensuite Tab Hunter, Troy Donohue etc...

La même année, peut-être, mais Buck Danny est tout de même une série qui doit beaucoup au modèle (sur la BD d'aviation) représenté par Milton Caniff.
