http://lecturederaymond.over-blog.com/article-32099711.html

http://lecturederaymond.over-blog.com/article-32379201.html

First, I wish to thank Raymond for the warm welcome, and I apologize for my lack of knowledge of french. If there are certain passages which are of interest to users which are french-speaking only, I hope to be able to make them accessible, with the aid of Raymond and/or some online translation…  Very Happy

First, I have to make clear that my knowledge of Caesar is still limited, although I have started my research on the journal Il Vittorioso about 6-7 years ago…

My interest stemmed from my love for another of the founding authors of the journal, Sebastiano Craveri, which is even less known than Caesar (Caesar, after all, in Italy is more or less known by people who read and collect comics).
In these years I have collected the journal year runs from 1937-1947, most of them are still incomplete but recently I managed to complete the 1937, which is pretty hard to find.

I knew italian authors which worked for Il Vittorioso were published in France (I recall a panel held by Francoise Moliterni titled "Un grande artista dimenticato: Sebastiano Craveri" at the Lucca Comics salon in 1992. The conference has been prepared by Edouard Francois, but was held by Claude Moliterni (I seem to recall) because Mr. Francois was sick.

But it was only recently that I tried to see if there were french editions of Craveri material around, and I found a french album "Boniface le Grand", which i thought was a story unpublished in Italy. Then I learned it is the french edition of the Craveri story "Le Sette Città" (from Il Vittorioso, 1937):

Kurt Caesar et le Vittorioso Ye4qOsg

My interest for the french publications started when I saw "Les Conquérants de l’Avenir”, published on the pages of L’Aventureux in 1936, a story which was never published in Italy.
Since I saw these are scarce and very expensive, I wished to know more about the french collecting market as well, and while doing a research I landed here.

The curator of the blog, Leonardo Gori, is a good friend of mine. He has been a huge collector of the 1930s and 1940s journals (and publications at large) for years, but he is very "americanophile" (in his own words) and although he collected "Il Vittorioso" he is more affectioned to the journals like L’Avventuroso and L’Audace which published the american syndicate strips in Italy. He has also written various essays on comics and their history in Italy. study

Sebastiano Craveri is totally unknown in France, and it's impossible to find his name in the "BDM" (the french "bible" for the collectors"). Therefore, I just begin to discover this artist. I suppose that some of his work has been translated and published in small magazines, but his name has never been mentioned in these publications. I don't know therefore where his works could be ?    deso

It does exist some specialists of italian comic strips in France, which could say much more than me about Cravieri. They have writen interesting articles about Kurt Caesar or Walter Molino in a french "fanzine" named Hop", and maybe they could give you some help.

Otherwhise, I have good news for you. The Aventureux collection has been totally scanned by the "Gallica.bnf" web site. You can therefore see (and copy) all the "Conquérants de l'avenir" story at this address :

http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k164777z/f1.image

If you want to buy the newspapers, you can of course find it on eBay (for example), but you have better to be a wealthy collector.

Thanks Raymond,
I have already discovered the digitizations done by the Gallica library: great work, but unfortunately they are low-resolution. I would love (if it is possible) to translate and print this story in Italy in the future, and for this I would need the journals…
Some of the issues are also missing, but it is great to see the inside pages as well… I see there is another Caesar story in the insides… study

Craveri is an artist (and writer) of exceptional quality, but a series of events (some war events as well) caused his oblivion in Italy as well. Here’s a pair of examples of his beautiful work, from Il Vittorioso.
In some ways, he has something in common with Calvo (which I know very little but he’s great) but he is much more moderate in the exuberance of the drawings (although no less visionary).

This is a page from "Il Viaggio delle Meraviglie" ("Le Voyage de Merveilles") from il Vittorioso of 1942:

while this is a "joint venture" first page illustration done together with Caesar for the Vittorioso issue of Christmas 1940:

Some more Craveri, collected in album format (all stories originally appeared serialized on Il Vittorioso):

Kurt Caesar et le Vittorioso 4T8SKZIh

These two are pretty scarce, as they came out around 1943 (the last two years of the war, a tough time in Italy):

Did Craveri still publish comic strips after the 2nd World War ?

That's right the digitization of "L'aventureux" are unfortunetly only 75dpi but it is better than nothing.

Here is another comics by Kurt Caesar (This one signed Corrado Caesar) "Le Croisé Noir" which was published in various newspapers in France before WW2. This came from its publication in Dimanche Illustré at the end of 1939:
Kurt Caesar et le Vittorioso W592

Actually I am looking for infos about Albi d'Oro publications (essentially the Will Sparrow stories), could you be of any help on this?

@Raymond: About Craveri, the story is a bit complex (if you wish I will try to explain), but he continued to work for Il Vittorioso up to the 1960s and on other titles like Il Giornalino. He died in 1973 of illness, and he and his wife did not have children, not even much relatives, so he basically fell into a sort of limbo. In the 1970s some of his early work was reprinted by amateur publisher Camillo Conti and a 1973 album came out from Fratelli Spada (this one allowed me to know and love him).

@arsen33: Thank you, very interesting to see the Crociato Nero french edition. Did they publish the entire story? I guess the only way to have it is to have the newspapers (daily newspapers or BD hebdomadaires?).

Il Crociato Nero (which I still have to read, as most of Caesar's work) exists also in novel form, illustrated by another great comic artist, Raffaele Paparella. The story is from Gian Luigi Bonelli, founder of Bonelli and creator of Tex Willer.

@arsen33: Ask me whatever you want about the Albi d’Oro: although I may not know what you wish to know, I can ask. Also, in 2013 Antonio Faeti wrote a very interesting essay about "his" comics (of the 1930s/50s), and one chapter is devoted to the Albi d’Oro and he talks about the Jack Sparrow stories.

Yes Dimanche Illustré published the whole story at the end of 1939. It ends on the 3rd of december. Most Dimanche Illustré newspaper are available in numeric form at "Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l’image":
Cité de la Bédé - Dimanche Illustré
Unfortunatelly, the 1939 is uncomplete and the beginning of the story is missing. Only the last 9 pages of this story are available.

Thanks, my question concern Van Straelen and then I will post it in this subject:

Did you post this here by mistake, Raymond? Was it intended for the Will Sparrow/Van Straelen thread?
Anyway, I have seen the story, which seems the only one published in the USA, is available at the DCM:
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=9059
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=7706
Two issues of Sky Blazers (the first one has just the Will Sparrow story, the other one is complete but from microfilm).

Hum ... there is no mistake. Besides the "Van Straelen thread", there is a place for Kurt Caesar, who created the beginning of Will Sparrow.

Both can coexist.   Wink

Otherwise, I didn't knew this interesting website !  pouce

Ah, OK, posted as Caesar's Will Sparrow, not for the other thread. Smile

Sky Blazers: it was common to serialize in batches of 6-10 pages in Golden Age comic books. One of the other few italian stories published in USA during the Golden Age ("Saturn against the Earth" by Zavattini/Pedrocchi) was serialized the same way.
It appears the Sky Blazers series ended with #2, so is the episode incomplete?
"Saturn against the Earth" was published incomplete.

@Raymond: The DCM is literally a gold mine for GA comic books. I also participated in the forum but it has been a long time since I posted.
